Extreme Sailing At Madeira

If you have been following the Extreme Sailing Series going on at the Madeira Islands, you would have seen the assault that was launched by the Alinghi team who came onto the Act 6 leaders of the Red Bull Sailing Team.


The Swiss team Alinghi and the Red Bull Sailing team exchanged blows on each other as they made their bids to reach the top of the table in Act 6.

The weather offered some challenges as well. For instance, there were shifty, light winds which made it difficult for the different international teams. As the racing started in Funchal, it is the capital of the Madeira Islands in Portugal, there was a large crowd gathered to catch the action. The breeze did not go over five knots and the sailors had to depend on using their sailing tactics to get ahead. The Psarofaghi’s team was the one that won that day as they finished first in each of the four races. They were able to gain more points than any team. The Res Bull Sailing team was able to win on the opening day race and another one. Overall the team finished in the fifth position.

Gulf Yachting chooses the Viper 640 for Capdevielle

On 5th September, following a democratic vote of its thirty-three member clubs, Gulf Yachting Association has chosen the Viper-640 as the brand new boat to be voyaged in its interclub Capdevielle Championship series. Voting was the windup of a multi-year selection procedure to get a successor for Flying Scot, the boat in use for nearly fifty years.
Gulf Yachting Association was established in the year 1901 to back sailing as well as to promote interclub completion. The Gulf Yachting Association clubs follow Gulf of Mexico coast from the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, Florida, where Viper arranges their winter series, west to Houston Yacht Club, in Texas, host to Viper North Americans 2013.
Gulf Yachting Association was looking for a contemporary and exciting platform that would get sailors perk up about this nearly hundred-year-old series, while not being restraining to less experienced sailors. The brand new boat required to be fast as well as high performance enough for youth and post-college sailors, when still being able to adapt older or less athletic sailors. The Viper -40 fit the bill.

Cheeki Rafiki disaster caused by weak keel, reports

An official report regarding the yacht disaster in the Atlantic, where 4 British sailors went missing, suggested that this might have happened because of a structural weakening of the yacht. In the part, groundings as well as subsequent repairs to Cheeki Rafiki might have triggered the dampening at the point where the stagger was bonded to the hull, said the report.

A report from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch reported that one or more bolts on the vessel might have deteriorated and it was likely that the crew was exhausted and their performance was impaired accordingly. MAIB concluded that in the absence of survivors and material evidence, the reasons of the tragedy remain a matter of speculation.

The 4 men lost in the 2014 May disaster were captain Andrew Bridge (22), from Farnham in Surrey, crew members James Male, (also 22), from Southampton; Steve Warren (52), from Bridgwater in Somerset and Paul Goslin (56) from West Camel in Somerset.

They had been participating in a regatta in Antigua and they were coming back to Southampton when their yacht capsized around seven hundred and twenty miles east-south-east of Nova Scotia in Canada on 16th May.

Team Dongfeng if Volvo Ocean Race dismasted at Southern Ocean

Team Dongfeng, the Franco-Chinese Volvo Ocean Race yacht group, was dismasted in the early hours of in Southern Ocean this morning. According to reports, everyone on the board are safe. Charles Caudrelier as well as his crew are coming back to Ushuaia in Argentina

Reports suggest that the mast came apart at 0315 UTC today, some hundred and sixty miles west off Cape Horn. It was still dark when the incident took place just above the 3rd spreaders. The yacht crew are able to carry on sailing utilizing a small headsail only, and only on port tack for now, building up at a speed of around 6 to 8 knots.

The Dongfeng shore band have been clambered and are already on their path to tryst with the yacht. The Volvo Ocean Race technical support team, captained up by Nick Bice, with GAC, are on the provision of getting one of the extra masts to Brazil.

Yacht firm to add 380 jobs, reports

On Tuesday morning, Gov. Rick Scott declared that Merritt Island Boat Works would start a whole new manufacturing facility, making around 380 brand new jobs as well as a capital investment of over US$ 16 million in the Brevard County.

In a statement, Scott told that Florida is on a mission to become the worldwide destination for jobs and it is really good news for the families in Brevard County which 380 new jobs will be included to the community. He added that While Merritt Island Boat Works considered other states for their new facility, they chose Florida as the best place to create jobs.
